Normal breathing doesn’t remove all the excess CO2 from your lungs. Breathing really heavily moves more fresh air into your lungs than usual, which is helpful when you’re about to fight something or run away. When you get injured or fall or something unexpected, the body just doesn’t know if the danger is gone.
