I don’t have a good biologic answer, but I will point out that as I age, I feel more tired IN GENERAL than I did in my youth. Similar to how it takes longer to recover from illnesses and injuries, older bodies simply don’t work as well as younger ones.

I have no science to back this up but I feel like when I was a kid I had way more motivation to get up and embrace the day than I do as a disenchanted, depressed adult. Could affect the energy levels and perceived ‘tiredness’?

Because your body is designed to move not rest, as you get older, most humans don’t have a healthy lifestyle, their overweight, bones are brittle. Lack of movement reduces blood flow to joints. Joints are stiff muscles are tight, the less you move the more uncomfortable you will feel, as you get older, simply sitting up and sitting down becomes harder and stiffer, your body movement is so limited that you have no blood flow to your joints, your bones become weak, your muscles are tight and weak. You overall feel far more uncomfortable. so when you sleep your not sleeping comfortably. It happens verrrrry slowly over a long time, if you ever had a bad injury or surgery you could understand it better.
Not moving makes it harder to move, then when you sleep your body can’t get comfortable and you fall asleep in a uncomfortable position. And when you wakeup you just feel the same way again. You don’t get a good sleep
