why is it when you pour water it sometimes goes down along the length of the cup instead of going straight down?

Surface tension – in short the water really likes to stick together and to other surfaces. If the cup doesn’t have some form of spout, and you pour it slow enough, it’s much easier for the water to stick to spill over the edge and stick to the surface of the cup than it is to break away and fall through the air.
