Why is our circadian sleep cycle 24 hours??

I know its about the rotation of the earth, night & day, but if we lived in planet with longer day will our sleep cycle be different?? And can you train yourself to a different cycle like 36 hours awake and 4 hours sleep??

The exact number 24h is realy just because thats how long a day is.
I remember there being some experiments by NASA and i think they found that something like 28h would actualy even be better. So its not a precise number of hours its more a range that humans can deal with and 24h is just the most convient.

The natural length of a day of people are kept from natural light and just sleep and wake as they like tends to be 25 hrs.

The natural circadian sleep cycle varies between people with the average being over 24 hours. It is being adjusted all the time to match the 24 hour day though, most importantly by the amount of light you see but also other factors like activity level and food. The circadian rhythm have evolved to be roughly the same length as a day because people with shorter or longer rhythm have had a very hard time to adapt to the day and night cycle which means they have had a harder time getting kids and making sure they grow up healthy.

We can not train ourselves to another rhythm far from the natural rhythm as it is a biological process that can not be changed. But by adjusting your activity level and more importantly the amount of light you see it is possible to adapt to a different rhythm close to the natural circadian rhythm. Some people find it easier to adapt to a 28 hour day meaning there is 6 days a week although this can be difficult socially. People who work with Martian robots and satellites will often adapt to a 24 hour 39 minutes rhythm to match the rotation of Mars. The robots need solar light to be active so transmissions to and from Earth needs to be timed to this.

Circadian sleep cycle – congenital factor. Slightly different for each species and their instinctive survival strategies. Something like some BIOS function in a computer.

Imagine that this function – computer’s internal clock. Just because it exists doesn’t mean you can’t install other software clocks, aspects of adaptability of the human body.

By habits or by artificially altered daylight hours you can perceive circadian sleep cycle differently, but it cannot be changed.

Yeah, it’s just 24 hours because that’s what’s there

If the days were longer, it would be longer, and if it were shorter it would be shorter.

As a similar sort of situation, but we hear like shit underwater because we don’t spend a lot of time underwater. Like we don’t hear our heartbeat or feel our organs doing stuff because that would distract us from survival.

A bunch of shit about the body is the way it is because that’s just how the environment we developed in is
