Why is pain (emotional or physical) cathartic?

I would guess that it is an evolutionary advantage. If a creature cries out loudly to relive its pain, this shows other creatures in its pack/herd etc that there is danger nearby? Say a pre-human was bitten by a snake and screams in pain, the other primates would know not to venture into the woods where the snake was
