I feel the biggest reason is because sickness can definitely disrupt sleep. I imagine all medicine made folks drowsy at some point and then society realized heavy duty jobs can’t be completed safely, and intellectual jobs couldn’t be completed with full competency. Back when we thought heroin and opioids were medicine, we’d sit around getting “well” all day, but it wasn’t getting well. It was destructive, unless of course one wanted to pass out for hours on end.
