Why is suffocating or drowning so agonizing but during hypoxia training (e.g. for pilots ) people sometimes don’t even realize that they are about to pass out?

It’s not the lack of oxygen that causes you pain but the buildup of carbon dioxide in your lungs, so while an atmosphere were there’s low oxygen levels but plenty of “air” you can exhale the CO2 but you aren’t getting enough oxygen, lack of oxygen in your body can reduce your brain function that’s why in aircraft safety briefings they tell you to put your mask on before helping others

During suffocating or drowning you have no air at all, during hypoxia training you still have air, you are still breathing, you just don’t have any oxygen.
