Why is swimming is deep water (like quarries) so dangerous? I would have assumed that, all things being equal, if the water’s depth is more than your height, it doesn’t matter how deep it is, but how far you are from the edge where you can get out. And is the world’s deepest swimming pool (the diver training one that gets posted to Reddit frequently) as dangerous as swimming in a quarry?

I think the big risk is the remoteness of such locations. A quarry is likely not to have other people around, so if something goes wrong, you’re much more likely to drown. Compared to a deep swimming pool where people are nearby to pull you out if needed and emergency services can readily access.
