When all decisions/emotions/attractions/thoughts etc. originate form the brain, why do people use “heart” in such contexts?

If you’ve ever had your heart broken, it literally hurts. Your chest hurts. I don’t know what scientifically causes it, but the impact of great pain or even great joy is felt physically in the chest. Our romantic predecessors linked the heart to our emotions.
