Why is the most common ruler length 30cm, is there a reason for this?

Because America.
Uh…well, I mean they didn’t wanna give up their foot and inches. So they made a compromise.
Other countries, UK probably:”hey why can’t you use our metric system? Everyone’s using it but you guys.”
America:”cause we don’t want to :)”
“Please? How we gonna communicate if you guys are using foots and inches? What’s a foot or inches even?”
“Okay fine….we’ll use your damn metric systems. But we’ll still keep our foots and inches.”
And thus…the rulers with centimeters.
The foot thing, but also standard paper is 216 x 280mm, so it can comfortably span the page without being unwieldy.
Because it’s about 12 inches, or 1 foot. That’s a useful length for measuring small things you can hold in your hand.
30cm is approximately 1 foot, which happens to be good tradeoff between a ruler that is easy to carry/use while still being long enough to be useful in a wide variety of situations
