Why is the pronoun ‘I’ the only pronoun that is capital by default in English?

ELI5 answer: It was hard to distinguish the letter I from other letters, so they started making it longer and longer until it became a capital letter. The rules for capitalization weren’t created until the 1700’s. Here are some links that explain this a bit better.
