Why do we compare our country’s currency to that of US’s and determine our currency’s value?

It’s a very stable currency, and older than many competitors. It’s from a large country with an even larger economy, on a per-capita basis. Since almost every one trades with the US, you can always get someone to buy your dollars or sell you some.
