The violin is the highest pitched string instrument in a standard orchestra. This makes it so it’s the easiest to hear and they often are in charge of playing the melody and faster and harder parts.

The first violin part is usually playing the melody that you would normally hum along to the music. While the second violins usually play harmonies or less prominent parts.
