why is the water in Venice so clear if the gondolas are hand powered?

Is it the currents or noise or what. Curious since the boats aren’t dumping gasoline or litter. Genuinely curious and any insight would be great. Thanks

People aren’t going out and littering, no tourists littering, it’s not about the boats it’s about less people in general

Just far less traffic in general. Motor boats are the standard transport for most people in Venice, so propellers are everywhere. And any time anything hits the bottom of the canals, be it the poles from gondolas, trash that might be discarded, anything, it stirs up sediment, but when there’s nothing to stir it up, it settles again, so the canals clear.
