Why is there a “fetching link” countdown when downloading certain files online?

To make you stare at the screen full of ads for a few moments longer, increasing the chances that you might click on one for lack of anything else to do.

Also because some people will pay money to skip even a 5 second wait.

So that you stay on their page for a couple seconds, look at the tons of ads, and maybe be so bored to actually click on one of them.

There’s absolutely no technical reason for this countdown to exist.

Ads are pay per click and pay per view. A view is counted only after a second for image or more than 50% for the video has passed since the ad has fully loaded inside the visible portion of the page.

They make you wait for ads to load on the page, so you could see them and they get their +1 view. If you accidentally click on any of the ads or fake download buttons it’s even better.
