Why is there a positive correlation between nighttime and anxiety levels?

Currently on a bit of a research tangent, and wondering why people associate the progression of night with increasing levels of anxiety? My theory is that humans are inherently afraid of the absence of light? Just theorizing.

I would have thought it would be about putting aside daytime activities that occupy your body and mind, and having to be alone with your mind as you settle down to go to sleep.

Any anxiety that has been dealt with in the day by avoidance or distraction, is given room to surface at night
