Oceans sorta flow in a circle. They get warmer around the equator and cold in the polar regions.
When the water gets cold it sinks. Some of it to the ocean floor And then moved back toward the warm equator again
The currents on the ocean floor are painfully slow. So by the time it gets to the equator again it’s very old basically.
So the eli5 answer is some water in the ocean floor moves slower than a snail.
