Why is US postage the same for 2 miles and 2000 miles?

Because it’s essentially a government enterprise and government doesn’t do anything well.
If the post office could be run like a real business, you would pay more for the value received.
Instead, we tax payers subsidize all the junk mail, catalogs, and Jeff Bezos.
