Why is/was having the high ground in battle so advantageous?

My thinking is that surely being able to be seen from a distance away isn’t an advantage.

I feel like I read some where that evolutionarily speaking, our vision evolved to see down better, we want to see where we are stepping when we are walking/running and we don’t have any real threats coming from above. So our brain processes our vision facing down better than up.
