Why passenger address systems in planes sound so bad?

The main reason is poor mic technique. The people who use the mic get waaaay too close to it causing it to ‘overdrive’ which causes the distorted, hard to understand sound.

The irony is that the system is designed specifically to accentuate the frequencies of the human voice that make words easier to understand. It doesn’t need to sound pleasant but rather it needs to be clearly understood even in a loud chaotic environment.

So if the flight attendants just backed off the mic and slowed down their speech a little you’d have a much easier time understanding what they are saying.
