My issue is with glass smashing into pieces under the smallest falls

Plastic isn’t a very stable material. It scratches pretty easily. Older devices used plastic because glass wasn’t as tough as it is today. It’s still used today for things like industrial use. It also doesn’t age very well. Glass is stable and won’t yellow/degrade over time. Plastic also isn’t as clear/crisp as glass and it can warp, especially with heat.
Glass is pretty much the best material for a touch screen after plastic. Any other transparent material is either more expensive or not as stable/tough.
Also, to clarify, not all glass is the same and “fragile”. Glass is a very diverse material. Yes, they’re all made from silica. But they are also doped with various metals that give them different properties that impact its toughness and how shatter resistant it is. Gorilla Glass for example is used for handheld devices because it has been doped with potassium that makes it shatter resistant.

I remember Motorola did this with the ShatterShield for a few models. Plastic screen that was impossible to shatter. All the ytubers at the time focused on how easy it was to scratch even though a simple film (PET) screen protector made this more ideal than gorilla glass. It didn’t seem to take off outside the Motorola force line of phones unfortunately.

Older phones where plastic screens, and would scratch easily. I still carry my phone in a pocket without my keys or wallet, out of habits learned from that time.
Glass is extremely hard to scratch, but easy to break. So they try to keep coming out with harder to break glass (gorilla glass).
