Why slapping on the bottom of a jar makes it easier to open?

The lid gets stuck because it creates a strong seal between the jar and the lid. Sapping the bottom of it causes a pressure wave to travel from the bottom to the top at the speed of sound which could help dislodge the the lid ever so sightly breaking the seal.
