basically, its because their often very new, official kit socks can be excessively tight due to fresh elastic, which can cause compression related issues for players who are wearing these for many hour of high-intensity activity, like cramps and such. So, some players cut holes into the socks to release that compression.

The players who do this have claimed multiple things.

One claim is simply comfort, they feel too tight, so they cut holes to make them more comfortable.

The other is a bit more of an urban myth, they believe it will prevent injury or cramps. They believe because of the tightness they have less circulation and are more prone to injury. It’s not at all backed by science, but footballers have never been the smartest.
