Why speed runs say any% but they do 100%

any % means no optional side-quests / activities are required.

100% means getting all optional stuff.

For example: an any % Super Mario 64 speed run means getting to the end of the game. In regular play, this means 70 stars, although speed runners do it in only a few. A 100% speed run is getting all 120 stars. The specifics will vary from game to game, but that’s the gist.

Well, 100% *is* technically any%. It’s even more impressive if a speedrunner can do 100% of the game (that’s getting *all* collectibles, doing all side missions, etc.) faster than a person who did an any% speedrun. It means they accomplished more in less time.

100% doesn’t usually mean “the end of the game,” it usually means “collecting every item,” “defeating every enemy” or something similar. Not just beating the game, but completing everything important within it.

For an easy example, we can use Super Mario 64, which is a really popular game for speed running. You normally have to collect a certain number of stars – 70 – to gain access to the final boss and beat the game, but there are 120 stars in the game total.

So a 100% speed run would be collecting all 120 stars, then beating the final boss. A 70-star speed run would require you to collect at least 70 stars (as any normal player would) and then beat the boss. And an any% speed run wouldn’t even require that – you would be allowed to use certain glitches (and there are lots of them) or other tricks to beat the game without collecting even that 70-star minimum.

– **Any%**: Complete the game as fast as possible.
– **100%**: Complete the game as fast as possible while completing all optional content.
– **Low%**: Complete the game as fast as possible, while picking up as few upgrades as possible.

Any% can happen to be equal to 100% in cases where there’s no optional content. Any% just means “no restrictions”. Any% is also often not the same as Low%, in cases where non-essential items make the game faster.
