Why striking a hard object with another hard object makes your hands numb

Sorry for maybe using wrong words, English is my first language but I can’t figure out how to word it correctly. Example: Hitting a metal mailbox with a metal bat while you’re in a moving vehicle. (Mailbox baseball is what google called it)

When you have a hard object hitting another hard object the objects don’t absorb the blow well, so all the force goes into your hand and your hand absorbs the blow.

energy has to go somewhere to decay, your hand is softer than the mailbox. energy will flow where it’s easiest.
