Why temperature variation across latitudes is more marked in winter in the Northern Hemisphere

One thing that comes to mind is that there is proportionally more water in the southern hemisphere. Water has a high heat capacity and tends to even out temperatures both because It moves about and because it responds only slowly. Land can heat up and cool down to match local solar input.
