They don’t include many perks, like international texts/calls, family plans, discounted phones, or domestic roaming. In T-Mobile’s case, Mint doesn’t include T-Mobile Tuesdays, or the in-flight WiFi benefit.

Small companies, like Mint, rent the use of the cell towers from T-Mobile/Verizon. They can offer cheaper plans because they don’t have to pay all the expenses that owning the towers includes, like maintenance and repairs.

MVNOs often are treated as “lesser” customers. Certain technical features may not be rolled out to MVNOs as fast as they are to T-Mobile customers, video streaming bandwidth restrictions may be forced regardless of data plans, and in times of network congestion, MVNO customers may see their data usage deprioritized.

Also, Mint’s pricing is heavily contingent on the customer paying for multiple months or a year at a time, and they don’t offer family plan discounts.

I always understood that it was a legal requirement. The government tolerates a monopoly of the three national carriers provided that they make their networks available to resellers.
