Why was milk delivered to your house in the 90s/early 2000s?

I never understood why milk was delivered to my house as a kid. This was so random

It wasn’t. We bought it at the store like we do today. It is also still delivered to this day, if you subscribe.

Pasteurization made keeping milk on the shelf possible. Before that, it was a race to consume it (often by making more-shelf-stable cheese) before it spoiled. But that was long before the 90s.
