I understand the divide between East and West, but why was the Wall erected specifically in Berlin?

Since Germany was divided, Berlin was also divided, being a very powerful city.

West Berlin lied entirely within East Germany. Germans in the Eastern half wanted to flee the poor conditions under communism, and the easiest way to do that was to go to East Berlin, cross over to West Berlin, and then enter the rest of the Western world from there.

Increasing security between East and West Berlin was the plan implemented to stop this.
