I understand the divide between East and West, but why was the Wall erected specifically in Berlin?

Mostly because it wouldn’t have made any sense for the Berlin Wall to be built in Cleveland.
The objective of the wall was to keep the people of the Soviet zone of Berlin from relocating to the other zones and depopulating that part of town.
