People have misconceptions about the location of the wall and Berlin. The whole Berlin was inside East Germany, then Berlin was divided in two, East Berlin and West Berlin. West Berlin became like an “island” because it was inside East Germany. At the beginning everything had to be flown in into West Berlin, so logistics were very complicated. Later on it was allowed to communicate West Germany with West Berlin with a single road. With the time people wanted to escape East Germany and everything they had to do was find a way to enter West Berlin, which was relative easy. So East Germany tightened the border and put the “wall” which initially it was just barbwire. With the time a real wall was built.
Greetings from (West) Berlin.
