As far as my understanding goes: when you are lifting something very heavy you need to stabilise your core at the same time. The way humans do this is by holding in their breath and essentially pressurising your torso like a big balloon.

The belts act like an extra strong balloon wall, helping out around your weakest points (stomach/abdominal area)

This is another reason people doing big lifts often end up: urinating, defecating, passing out, bursting blood vessels in various places especially in the nose (delicate) and eyes (also delicate). All from the increased pressure.
