Because as humans took over and travelled to new places we exticted the largest animals first. Big animals have a lot of meat, are easy to spot, and can’t run away. We know this from archeology and from the histories of places like Australia. Big animals also suffer the most from habitat loss since they need more resources. This process is still happening.
