Grab some paper and make a little flip book animation. A stick man walking a ball bouncing w/e. Watch it go. Now watch it well blinking rapidly. It will look the drawing is “instantly” jumping from place to place. The same amount of time has passed but the information your brain can see is different. Sleeping is like blinking with your brain, there is less information to see so when your brain squishes the limited information together it seems instant.

Because the passage of time depends on our perception.

Que Einstein: When you sit with a nice girl for two hours you think it’s only a minute, but when you sit on a hot stove for a minute you think it’s two hours

When you are asleep, you are no longer conscious, thus you stop tracking time. which makes it appear instantaneous. This is why sometimes nightmare and dream feels EXTREMELY long, but when you wake up, it feels “short”
