Gets the medicine where it needs to be faster than the digestive tract, and doesn’t require the training/pain of a shot being administered

It has mostly to do with how the medicine is absorbed.

Going through the mouth is a great way to get into the body, but you have to deal with the digestive system.

Whether it’s through the butt, or the mouth, the intestines are a fantastic way to get something into the blood stream. Through the butt avoids the digestive system and both have different effects such as rate of absorption. Injecting something straight into the blood stream is basically an all-at-once deal, where something absorbed via the skin, or intestines have an over-time effect.

All sorts of logic, but it mostly boils down how quickly does the medicine need to be delivered, if not quickly, does the medicine need to be delivered over a long period of time to be effective, and does the digestive system harm the medicine in some way.

1. The patient might be a young child (or a challenged adult) whom you cannot convince to take a pill.
2. The patient might have nausea and unable to hold anything in, so they’d just vomit right out any pill they take.
3. You generally need at least some minimal training or prior experience to do shots correctly. There is also pain and some risks.
4. Suppositories are more effective because they get absorbed into the bloodstream right away and don’t go through the patient’s stomach and liver first.

WANT TO or NEED TO?

The reasons why you would NEED TO take a suppository are:

1. No work required on your part, infants, confused, immobile patients, people unable or unwilling to swallow etc. can get suppositories.

2. Avoiding the “First pass effect”,if you swallow medicine it goes through the digestion process, stomach acid, digestive enzymes, the liver may mess with the medicine, in the butt it goes straight into the blood.

3. You can’t puke up a suppository. If you are nauseous, put the medicine in the other end.

4. Topical effects. Maybe you have problems in your butt, so put the medicine in your butt.
