WIFI Card upgrades within a laptop. How is the upgrade possible with the same antennas within the laptop?

I recently was able to upgrade my AC wifi card to an AX210 card and i can confirm that Wifi 6 is working fine.

It’s like upgrading the engine in a car without changing the tires. Yes, one external interface is still the same, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find benefits by changing other parts.

Because it is the chip that is responsible for all of the logic and communication that is occurring. The antennas are just a thin straight piece of metal to pick up the RF signals and relay them to something for processing. Newer processor improved speeds, I did this exact same thing with my Dell laptop upgrading it from an AC chip to an AX chip.

Wi-Fi was designed to work with the most primitive antennas on the client side. More advanced antennas typically require more space. Wi-Fi cannot afford to require special antennas. It is designed to be installed in small space-constrained devices.

It really depends on the antennas and wifi cards, to be honest.

If laptop came with a card that was for 2.4GHz only, you might have issues with performance on 5GHz. With that said there isn’t much difference between the antennas.

AC and AX uses the same frequency bands, so the antennas are actually more or less the same. What would require a change is going from a normal omnidirectional radio to one that does MIMO/beamforming, which requires multiple antennas, but that is a technology only really seen on the access point side and those don’t feature swappable parts.
