With lifting weights, why is there different rep ranges for different goals?

The general consensus is 1-5 for strength, 8-12 for hypertrophy, and anything above for indurance. But why?

For strength and endurance, it’s obvious by the definition of those words. Strength is how much you can lift.. Endurance is how long you can lift.

For muscle growth, they just recommend an in-between.
