Unmanned spaceflight is infinitely easier than unmanned air flight, and unmanned air flight is infinitely easier than unmanned driving. It’s for the same reason. There’s much fewer obstacles and much fewer false positives – in space if you see something it’s there, in flight it’s highly likely it’s there. In unmanned driving? It’s a funky reflection off of the ground/steam/rocks, you name it. Plus there is just more stuff there. Sorry you’re getting the drunk thanksgiving version.
