ELIF: What happens to all the dust and smoke we inhale due to pollution?

It gets caught up in the mucus in the lungs, which is gradually expelled up into the throat and swallowed, then pooped out.

It’s absorbed or dissolved by mucus in the lining of the lungs. This mucus is carried up the bronchi/trachea (windpipe) by tiny hairs called ‘cilia’ which beat in waves to drive the mucus towards the mouth/nose. The mucus is then either swallowed, spit out, or coughed/sneezed out.
