Tangerines and oranges are different species of same genus.

Lemons are also in this genus but our wouldn’t say lemons are just old oranges, would you?

I tend to just think of Citrus as having races rather than subspecies etc. It’s just like people. Aren’t we all homo sapiens sapiens? Can’t we all just get along?

Yes. And they’re all just Citrus. This one’s from China.

Most citrus come from a small number of ancestral species. Pomelo, mandarian and citron.

As the name would imply mandarian oranges are one of the original citrus species. Though they are more bitter originally and have been selected to be sweetie.

An orange is a hybrid between pomelo and mandarian. Though depending on the variety of orange it may also have citron in it’s family tree.

So I guess since mandarins are not hybrids I would say that oranges are the babies
