How can LSD be non-toxic but the research chemical 25i, which from what I read has similar effects, be deadly?

Because they’re not the same chemical, or even in the same family of chemicals. LSD is a serotonergic psychedelic and 25I-NBOMe is a substituted phenethylamine. Chemicals can be superficially or partially similar and have some similar effects but very different pharmacologies, or have nearly identical molecular structures with wildly different effects.
