How do satellites work? (In relation to getting internet on a ship)

In: Technology

The relay signals between the ship and a grund station on earth that it connects to the internet.

The simplest variant is that they receive a signal from the ground station and re transmitter it in another frequency to a large geographic area. The do the same with the signals transmitted to the ships and transmitter it to the ground station.

The signal to the ground station have a narrow beam as it only need reach a single point but the signal to the ship will cover a large area.

Satellites act like a mirror for the signal. Due to the Earth’s curvature, radio waves cannot cover long distances along the surface because they will run into the ground. Satellites are a way of “getting over the hump” since they’re way up above the surface and allow us to “bounce” the signal off them and send them towards their destination.
