When prices outpace wages to the degree that a day’s work won’t cover a day’s expenses of food & shelter. Existential crises happen when the kids are hungry.

There’s no such thing as an existential threat to an economy. The fact of economy persists even in anarchy or revolution or without currency. It just changes in such a way that it is broadly perceived as shitty.

When no one knows how much your currency is even worth, it is a bad sign. When people start using barter, your nation is collapsing. Humans began using fiat money because it was easier than bartering.
