If were not really sure what causes diseases like bipolar disorder, how are doctors able to prescribe medications like anti depressants?

They try to fix the symptoms while they learn more about it.

If something destroyed the bridge to your home. You’re going to try and rebuild the bridge while you try and figure out how to stop what broke it in the first place.

I’m Not a doctor.

They dont treat the actual problem the treat the symptoms created by it. I.e. they cant cure ADHD but they can suppress certain parts of your brain activity to make it easier to focus.

The scientists experimented with a bunch of different treatments until they found ones that worked most reliably and with the least side effects, and those treatments are now available to doctors to prescribe to patients for the relief of symptoms of diseases like bipolar disorder.

In essence, it’s the ‘guess and check’ method, undertaken with scientific precision.

there are two goals in medicine: primarily easy of the symptoms for the patient, and secondary understand the issues.
of course, understanding the issue may result in better medication, but you can still help the symptoms if you don’t understand the issue (more or less by trail & error).
