radiation causes cancer, but radiation therapy is used to beat cancer?

In:

We need water to survive but we can also drown in it. Excessive radiation is bad. There are safe limits to which a human can be exposed to radiation.

Water is necessary for life. Brackish, polluted, or salt water will kill you. A steady stream of water from a shower head is comforting, a stream of water from a pressure washer can cut into your flesh

Maybe not the perfect analogy, but my point is there are different types of radiation and different doses/delivery methods. When used to treat cancer, it is a specific type of radiation that is closely directed to the cancerous area.

Radiation causes DNA damage. DNA damage can cause cancer, but in 99% of cases the cell just dies.

Radiation can lead to the Mutation of cells, which then devolp into Cancer, which grows and spreads. In radiation therapy doses of concentrated radiation are used to cause damage to the cancer cells so severe they just die

Radiation can ionize atoms in the DNA of the cell. This most often kills the cell. Sometimes the cell DNA can mutate and create a cancerous cell. The treatment works on the basis that more cells die than become cancerous
