There really isn’t a need. The _vast_ majority of the media produced is by American companies featuring American characters set in American cities. If you are a non-American actor, you open up a huge number of new roles by being able to pass as an American.

There aren’t as many shows featuring non US locations or characters, so the few roles that are out there can be filled by “native” actors.

Because the British can do an American accent rather well and sound dignified, when an American tries to soumd British it is pathetic. See Costner in Robin Hood for clarification.

Different sized markets. If a British actor wants to make it big, they want to be in American movies. While there are some British characters in American movies, they’ll have a lot more opportunities if they can do a convincing American accent.

But you don’t get many American actors wanting to break into the relatively smaller British film industry. On the occasions where American actors do play British characters, it’s usually in American movies or TV.

Keanu Reeves is a legend but that was one of the few times he maybe should have said no.

If a character is British in a movie, then it tends to be a defining trait. That means they’ve got to pull off the accent, so why not have a British actor do it? Obviously there are exceptions, but it’s very noticeable when actors can’t pull off an accent.

Since the USA has the big movie making industry, characters being American in American films is just the default and (generally) not a defining trait.

This means you can hire based on other qualities and just have the accent be some neutral American one. Therefore you’re not really excluding British actors.
