what is supersonic unstart

specifically scramjet unstart

In: 5

A supersonic unstart occurs when the air in the scramjet blows out the flame. It’s like blowing out a candle, it stops combustion and in the scramjet case, thrust.

It’s not supposed to happen, because the scramjet structures are shaped to produce uniform smooth flow. But, if turbulence or some excessive maneuver causes the airflow to depart from the flow structure or something like a cloud bumps the air density up too much, it can happen as a result.

You’ll want to restart promptly, or the friction will pull you below the scramjet’s minimum working speed.
