What is the process of making plastics that makes them so difficult to replace?

Its more the opposite actually, its all the stuff that isn’t in the process.

Plastics are super super cheap. They are not technically hard to replace, they are economically hard to replace. It just represents a huge loss in profit for companies to switch to alternatives. Thats why there are huge areas of research dedicated to reducing the costs of alternatives (but we aren’t there yet).

It’s not hard to replace, it’s expensive to replace and plastics are made from oil, a finite resource (ok it’s not likely to run out any time soon even with all the doom and gloom and peak oil stuff there’s still enough to last for decades even half a century or more .. but it becomes harder to extract therefore more expensive) today there are ways of creating synthetic plastics (I even saw a GMO that can make plastic from plants) and there are plenty of alternatives but they are all either too expensive or inferior.
