What makes rechargeable batteries different from non-rechargeable batteries. It’s the chemistry. The reactions in a rechargeable battery can be reversed easily, where as it’s not so easy to reverse expendable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are usually lithium-ion or nickel cadmium.

Regular batteries are alkaline, most typically using zinc and manganese dioxide.

The substances in them are completely different because they have different properties.
