To the best of my knowledge, this isn’t a field of inquiry that’s well covered by Western medicine.

It’s something that alternative medicine talks about a lot, and most people that have dealt with depression or trauma have very specific things to say about how their body carries those problems and where they feel it.

But I’ve looked, in the past and after being prodded by this reminder, and I don’t know of any reputable studies done on the question.

People dunk on alternative medicine, and they’re not totally wrong to do so, but this is the kind of thing that drives people to it. My doc is ok at best, and I’ve absolutely had worse – I can’t even imagine what it would look like if I went to him about figuring out how my body reacts to stress and depression.

It’s caused by stress hormones. That’s why you can get it at other times as well, and why it’s usually accompanied by the shakes.

We don’t really know. Intense emotional stress will weaken your immune system. This can actually cause you to have low levels of inflammation all over your body whin in turn can cause all sorts of pains and heart irregularities. If you ever experienced intense grief you know a “broken heart” isn’t just a metaphor and the pain is quite really. Depression is similar to that effect while it also affects the area in your brain responsible for pain wich might be related.

I do t know what it is but I do know that a wonderful person led me to meditation. I feel and experience the hollow and comfort it as I would a small child. I works. No idea why or how.

It’s the place where their hopes and dreams used to be, now relentlessly crushed by the bleakness of their existence.
